Mahatma Gandhi NREGA is one of the most important schemes which play a major role in rural economy, has been implemented in Purulia successfully since inception.Main objectives of this scheme were to provide works to the unskilled labourers demanding jobs, to create durable/sustainable assets and to reduce out migration

This scheme offers the opportunity to transform barrenness of this semiarid zone into fertile and productive piece of land through execution of maximum possible works under water conservation, water harvesting and drought proofing sectors and thus contributes a major share in “Usharmukti” and “Matir Srishti” as well. Apart from this, various type of works under rural infrastructure, rural connectivity, plantation, animal husbandry in convergence with ARD department etc. have been implemented significantly under this scheme.

Almost 3.8 lakhhouseholds are dependent on MGNREGS in this district who earned their livelihood from this scheme. This scheme aims to create sustainable assets for community and individual as well in such a way that one beneficiary can earn his livelihood from that asset in future directly or indirectly.

In 2021-22 financial year, total 132.30 lakhpersondays generated by 2.63 lakh Job-card holders on an average 50 PD/HH. Participation of SC (16.2%), ST (19.7%) and women (45.5%)are also significant in this district.
